Understanding Shutter Materials for Effective Cleaning

Understanding Shutter Materials for Effective Cleaning

Determining the construction material of your shutters is crucial before starting to clean. This knowledge dictates the most suitable cleaning approach, safeguarding against potential damages that could affect their appearance, smooth operation, or proper fit.

Cleaning Wooden Shutters

For wooden shutters, a straightforward cleaning method is to use a dry microfibre cloth or a dusting tool. Open the slats to clean each one from end to end, then close them to clean the entire structure from the top to the bottom, not forgetting the framework. Any accumulated dust in the corners or along the edges of the slats can be carefully brushed away with a soft, dry toothbrush, ensuring the wood or any finish remains unscratched and undamaged.

It's crucial to avoid using water or aggressive chemical cleansers on wooden shutters, as they can induce warping, cracking, and fading of the wood's natural colour.

Cleaning Vinyl Shutters

Vinyl shutters, favoured for their moisture resistance in high-humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens, can attract more dust and dirt due to particles settling on them from moist air. Similarly to wood shutters, the most effective initial cleaning step is using a clean microfibre cloth or duster, starting with the louvres open for individual cleaning, and then closed for an overall wipe, including the frame, to ensure not only cleanliness but also dryness.

Steer clear of abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents to prevent scratching or damaging the surface.

When dealing with hybrid shutters, which combine vinyl louvres with a wooden framework, treat them as you would solid wood shutters for cleaning purposes. Vacuuming any shutter variant with a gentle, soft-bristled upholstery tool can safely remove dust without damage.

It is vital to avoid the use of water or strong chemical detergents on these shutters to prevent the wood components from suffering warping, cracking, or colour degradation.

Removing Shutters Stains

Should you encounter a stubborn stain on your shutter that does not come off with a dry cloth, there is still a safe method to remove it without harming your shutter. Moisten a cloth very lightly until it is just damp, and gently wipe over the stain until it disappears. Resist the urge to scrub vigorously or to employ any cleaning agents. After successfully removing the stain, ensure to dry the area completely with a fresh, dry cloth.

This technique is suitable for both wooden and vinyl shutters and is generally effective in eliminating most stains.
